Your guide to Pokemon card shopping across Japan

500+ Shops. 10 Years. One Mission.

I'm Jake (@mrmagikarp), a Pokemon card collector from the UK, based in Singapore. Over the past decade, as a result of work trips and personal travel I've visited 500+ card shops across Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and beyond—hunting everything from vintage Base Set holos to modern tournament staples.

Over the years, I've built up a feeling for the Japan Pokemon card scene. I've learnt where to go, where not to waste my time, and discovered those TCG stores that feel authentic, real and like stepping back to the 90s.

Whilst the Pokemon scene in Japan has changed a lot in the last few years, there are still unbelievable bargains to be had, and Cardo Compass is here to help you! Within the last year, I have scored vintage grails such as a no rarity charizard for around 30% of market price, picked up modern bangers such as the moonbreon for significantly less than you'll be able to find anywhere else, and unfiltered, in demand packs for MSRP.

This directory shares everything I've learned. Whether you're a serious collector hunting Japanese exclusives, Pokemon center promos, researching market prices, or a tourist wanting to visit a few shops without getting lost—this guide will save you time and money.

I still collect primarily for fun. Most of my cards never get sold because I genuinely enjoy building my collection. But I also know what it's like to have limited time in Japan, a tight budget, and no idea where to start.

So let's make your trip count.

Happy hunting,
Jake
